A week of Dr. Seuss

Last week we celebrated Dr. Seuss in honor of his birthday on March 2nd.  There were books read, writing activities, an estimation jar, art work and many of the teachers and students dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters.  It was a week filled with fun and learning .

Our week began with Green Eggs and Ham.  The children listened to the story and then went off to write their own poem of Green Eggs and Ham.  We have many poets in our 4th grade who shined with their creativity.
This book, Oh the Places You'll Go! is one of my favorites.  Once it was read  to the class, they were sent off to create a "suitcase" filled with where they want to go, what they will bring and why they chose that place.  I have to say, these were fantastic.  I love to see the children immerse themselves in writing and using their imagination.
There were a variety of writing pieces that were developed throughout the week. From The Lorax to Horton Hears a Who, the children created so many wonderful pieces of writing to showcase around the classroom and in the hallways.
It was one of my favorite weeks so far in class.  I loved watching the students create their stories and share with each other.  Kudos to Ms. Lopez also for coming up with some wonderful ideas to share with the students.

Friday was the icing on the cake.  The Academy teachers and many of the other staff and faculty members dressed up as Dr. Seuss characters.  The children were very excited to see us.  Many of our students were also characters from the many books of Dr. Seuss.  We had the Cat in the Hat (aka Mrs. Bello) come in to read to us, and what's a birthday celebration without some special treats?  There were pencils, bookmarks and even an estimation jar.  It was a day full of fun and learning.

I cannot wait for what is coming up in the next few months.  Stay tuned for what's ahead...
