A Successful Live Wax Museum

This week was lots of fun as the students presented their Live Wax Museum projects to the students and teachers of SOS.  They truly did an amazing job and I was so impressed with the results.  Each student gave a speech, dressed as the famous Rhode Islander, wrote a research paper and created a trifold with a lot of fun facts and information.  I truly enjoy this project as an end of the year one.  They shined right before our very eyes.

Wax Museum Presentations:

There was lots of practice beforehand.  Speeches were rehearsed and memorized.  Costumes turned out great and it was very interesting to hear all of the reports.

Preparations for the Wax Museum:

The Day of the Wax Museum:
The actual day was also amazing as they put themselves into character.  The end results blew me away.  I was so impressed and proud of them.

Amplify Science:

The children are finishing up the Unit on Vision and Light.  They are discovering how humans' senses are in comparision to those of animals.  They enjoy the hands on activities that are involved and many great discussions take place.

Reading-
With the ending of our Wonders Units, we are finishing up the year with the novel- Tuck Everlasting.  The children are really enjoying listening to it and having conversations about the events that take place.  We are even writing an opinion piece about whether or not living forever is a good thing.

We are even doing a literature circle with Tuck Everlasting.  They are discussing the novel and have roles as to what they need to complete during the period of time.

Kings and Queens for the Week:
The following students had a chance to be the king or queen for the day. They love choosing their seat, being line leader for the day, getting their brain break and ending the day with an activity of their choice.

Coming Up:
The children will be participating in Field Day on Wednesday.  Looking forward to this event.  The children will be able to play and have some fun.

Our last Spirit Week is scheduled for the week of June 12th.  Some of the themes include, Tropical Day, Party in the USA, Animal Print Day and Camping Day.  More information to follow.

Hope everyone enjoys Memorial Day!

The Room is Buzzing with Excitement

 I can hear and see all the excitement around the school.  The children know that summer is heading in our direction.  Events are being planned throughout the school.  Teachers are beginning to pack up some of their belongings for the summer break.  The children are asking, "How many more days of school do we have left?" and the countdown in our classroom has begun.  I initiated a new event in our classsroom this year.  I call it King/Queen for the Day.  Since there are 23 children in our room, I put up 23 balloons and in each one is the name of a student.  If their balloon is popped, then for the day, the student gets special privileges.  The student can choose a seat of their liking, have a morning and afternoon brain break, get an activity of their choice to end out the day and is the line leader for the entire day.  We love the moment when the balloon is popped to see who it will be.

Here are the past week's chosen Kings and Queens.  They are really enjoying this.

Reading:

We have completed the 5 Units in Wonder, so to finish off the year, we are reading Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt.  We are listening to it while we follow along in the book and do some comprehension questions.  Imagine being able to live forever? Pros and Cons I say but cannot wait to see what the students think.

Amplify Science;

We began Chapter 5 and it is all about the senses compared to animals and humans.  The children are having great conversations around it.

Reveal Math;
We are beginning Fractions- first I had them come up and create a What They Know about Fractions List.  Then we worked with math manipulatives to discuss parts to make a whole number.  Again, the conversations and working collaboratively really worked out nicely.

Social Studies:
We are nearing our Live Wax Museum event and the children are practicing their speeches.  This week the children worked on their statue poses and giving their speech all about the famous Rhode Islander.  I am so excited to see the final presentationns.
