Falling Into a Great Year

We are all settled in and on the right path to learning.  We had another successful and full week of learning and discovering.

This past week we read Talent Show and Experts Incoporated.  The stories portrayed how actions affect others.  We had wonderful conversations about things we do and how it affects the whole group.  The children collaborated with one another and held great conversations in their group.

Writing-

We have been working on Personal Narratives.  We are watching videos to help us organize our writing starting with what exactly is a personal narrative, to brainstorming with a topic they chose, writing an introduction and drafting the narrative.  As I circulated around the room, I saw many interesting topics that have been chosen.

In Math class, we just finished up Unit 2- Place Value and the children took the first on-line assessment on Friday.  We have been working on many topics such as word, expanded and standard form, rounding and knowing what the positions the numbers are in.  I am in the process of correcting the tests and will have them on Skyward as soon as I can.

We have been reading and learning all about blackouts and how they happen.  We read a book titled- Systems and are learning about how the electrical system works.  Our goal is to figure out why the lights went out in a small town called Ergstown.  The children seem very involved in their learning.

Social Studies-
We are continuing to learn about our Town.  The children are watching a PBS video all about North Providence and are taking notes.  We are learning a lot of information about this town and the children will be introduced to a research project that they will be doing in the upcoming days.

We have begun the i-Ready assessment in Reading this week.  The children watched a video, signed a pledge and were introduced to the platform.  We explained the importance of not rushing, trying their best and answering all the questions.  This upcoming week, we will take the second session of Reading and then begin the Math sections.

Our Student of the Week goes to Anthony!

On Tuesday the children will take the 2nd session of i-Ready in Reading-Thursday we will begin session 1 of Math

There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday for Unit 1 Week 3

Have a wonderful week!

Inspiring Minds

We had another amazing week in 4Z.  There was lots of learning, collaboration and discovering throughout our days.  Even though we still haven't had a full week, we did get a lot in and continue to blossom each day.  The children seem well adjusted to the classroom, schedule and curriculum.

Wonders:

Our week started with still discussing natural disasters and how people react in these situations.  The children worked in their groups and individually to work on citing evidence, text features and discussions about the genre (expository text).

Reveal Math:

The children have begun Unit 2 of math and are working with Place Value.  Mrs. Sanchez and I team teach and give it our best to get the material to the children in exciting and traditional ways.

Science:
We kicked off our dive into Science by taking a look at our safety guidelines and routtines for experiments.  The children did a fun, collaborating activity: Saving Fred, to jump start with what it means to work together.  The children seemed to have loved this and worked together to get Fred (gummy worm) to be saved from being capsized from a boat.  There were lots of great strategies and conversations among the groups.
We also began our first unit- Energy Conversions.  The children worked to figure out what could cause blackouts.

Writing:
We have been doing a lot of writing.  The children have started their personal narratives.  We discussed what they involve and now they are working on brainstorming and writing a hook.

I-Ready:

The district has trained us in I-ready, which is a new program that is replacing AimsWeb.  The children will be placed on levels based on how they do on the diagnostic/benchmark assessment.  We will be starting that up this coming week. We have discussed it with the children and have attended an assembly to get them familiar with it.  We will talk about it more and get them started by Tuesday.  More info to follow.

Star Corner:

We have had 2 students of the week so far:

9/6 Gavin

9/13 Makayla

They have displayed all of our star qualities and continue to do so.

Open House;

We had a spectacular turn out for Open House.  It was great to meet those of you that were able to attend.  We will also be holding Parent/teacher conferences in November.  More to follow.

Reminders:
The children will all need earbuds/headphones this week so that they can use them during the i-Ready assessments.
Forms- some still need to be sent into class

Have a wonderful week ahead!!
Shout Outs:
I would like to shout out Miss Erika and Mrs. Sanchez for always being such a great assesst to the classroom.  I am so grateful to have them always lending a hand.
