Tis The Season

This past week was another productive and busy one.  We are all awaiting our winter break and the Holidays.  The classroom is bustling with activities and work.  The children are moving right along.

Our mornings start out with the word of the Day and we move onto ELA.

Wonders:
We are continuing to work in our reading/writing companion book.  The children are reading new stories, working on the genre of the week, learning meanings of vocabulary words and the authorÅ› point of view.  This past week they also worked on researching a famous landmark in RI and will present it in either a podcast, slide or poster.

In Writing they have been working on realistic fiction pieces.  They are planning and drafting their story.  The topic has to do with being nervous about doing something.  They are working on creating a story about this topic and will continue this week.

The children also work on i-Ready daily to meet our 45 minute goal in both Math and Reading by the end of the week.

Reveal Math:
We have completed Unit 5, however, we had a review of the assessment and many will be retaking it on Monday.  We went over each math problem together and they came up to show and explain their work.

Social Studies/ Holidays Around the World:
We continue to learn about how various countries celebrate the holidays.  At this point we have researched Brazil, Australia, Canada, and Germany.  We will continue with India, Canada, and Italy this upcoming week.

Amplify Science:

We are finishing up the unit on Electricity this week.  The children have been working on inputs and outputs.  They created electrical devices on the simulation online.  It was great to see them create and discover new devices as they put parts together.

Upcoming Events:

The week of December 16th is Spirit Week- see the flyer below to see what each day is dedicated to.

On Friday, we will have the student of the month and attendance assembly.  We are also going to hold our star conferences and it is also Grinch Day in the 4th grade (more to come on that).

Here´s to  one more week of fun and learning.  It is going to be exciting and enjoyable for everyone.

Bustling Through the Week

Our days are moving along quickly and 4Z is busy at work.  We had another great week and so much is getting accomplished.

Wonders:

We have begun a new unit in Wonders.  The children are reading stories about how children can help out in their communities.  We are reading, working on vocabulary words, working on verbs and verb tenses and working in groups as we go along.

We also presented the group Haiku poems about Sharks.  They did a fantastic job.

We read Aquinaldo and worked in groups.

Reveal Math
We are finishing up our unit on patterns and are reviewing for our test this upcoming week.
The children work together and even come to the board to show their work and explain how they figured out the problems.  It is great to watch the student engagement in solving problems.

Amplify Science:
We have been working on our Electricity unit and discovering about the causes of the blackout in Ergstown.  The children work together to figure out all they can about what makes things work in their homes, school and community.

Holidays Around the World- Social Studies:
We are learning how various countries celebrate the holidays.  So far we have read about Brazil and Australia.  This week we will learn about Canada, Germany and India.  The children seem to be enjoying it.

Holiday Shopping:
The children were very excited to do a little bit of shopping for their family members.

Reading Buddies:
The children look forward to meeting with their reading buddies in Kindergarten.  So on Friday mornings that is where you will find us.  This week they created gingerbread houses with the Kindergartners and they turned out really great.

Solar Ovens:
As part of our Science work, we created solar ovens on Friday and cannot wait to see if anything happens to the marshmallows that we put inside.  The children worked in their group to put together the ovens and now we wait and see what will happen.  They are all placed on the window sills.

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.  We will be busy again and counting the days to our Holiday Break.
