Preparing for State Testing

Grade 4:
This week the 4th graders were lucky to go outside during their Intervention block and do some reading/writing.  The weather was beautiful- the sun was shining, the temperature hit into the 60's.  The children enjoyed either reading a book or just free writing about their thoughts.  In the near future I am hoping to get out there more so that they can enjoy reading or writing in a different enviornment.  The children can bring in beach towels to sit on whenever we have days like this.

The children have also been practicing for the RICAS test. One day during Intervention block we reviewed the various tools that they can use during the testing .  April 6th and 7th will be their ELA test dates.  Mrs. Davia has had them practice with a writing prompt.  In Science and History the children are also reading Informational text and completing assignments given by the teachers.  Math is also progressing along with Division as their main topic.

Grade 5:

The fifth graders have also been practicing for the

RICAS testing.  They will begin on March 30th and 31st for the ELA section.  We have practiced both the computer based and the tools they are able to use.  The writing portion of the test is where most of the time was spent.  There is a RICAS choice board on their google classroom to practice some of the skills we were not able to get to.

After about 3 days of practicing we went back into the EL Education Curriculum and continued with the Rainforest.  The children listened to Seeds of Change and then completed a Padlet that asked them the question: What can you do to save the Rainforest?  There were many wonderful responses.

On Friday we held our third Virtual Student of the Month assembly.  It was great to see so many of our distance learners.  Mrs. Brothers does such a great job with these assemblies.

This week our 5th graders will begin with the RICAS testing.  We know that they will put their all into them and make us proud.  We have total confidence that if they take their time, answer each question using the RACE strategy, and put in 110%, they will do great!!!  Good Luck 5th graders, you've got this.

Reading Week was a Great Success

This week we celebrated Reading Week with lots of great activities and books read to the children.

We started on Monday with Camoflauge Day.  We discussed the theme of Hope- Heal- Read and created what our hopes are.
Day 1: Camoflauge Day

They did a fantastic job and great conversations were started.

Day 2: Rainbow Day
The day started with more conversations about Hope and Healing, we watched a video all about hope.

The teachers also had a great time being a part of all this.
Day 3: Stop Light Day
Thursday we read And The People Stayed Home.  After reading and discussing the message behind it ( staying home during quarantine and having more time to do things like reading, spending time with family) the students drew a picture/symbol of how they spent their quarantine.

With all the excitement and activities planned, the students worked on the end of the trimester writing benchmark.

Day 4: Wear Black/White Day
The week ended with wearing black and white and more discussions about healing during this pandemic.  Overall, we had an amazing week.  We are all on the road to recovery.
In between all of this we celebrated St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph's Day.

That'a our week.  We are all doing our best to heal during the very different year we have had.  If we have hope, we can get through anything that comes our way.
Coming this week:
We will be practicing for RICAS testing in the next couple of weeks.  More to come on testing.

Spring is in the Air and Learning is Everywhere

Spring is in the air and learning is everywhere!
5th Grade:

We had another week of learning and discovering.  The EL Education Curriculum is up and running.  The
students are making inferences, learning about the rainforest, writing summaries and taking part in great discussions.

Informational Writing will include the Rainforest and why it is important to save it.

The students are watching videos, taking notes and organizing their research so that they can put together an eBook about the Rainforest and how diverse it is.

4th Grade:

Our 4th graders are also working with informational reading and writing.  They are learning about Animal Defenses.  They are summarizing, reading how animals defend themselves and having conversations about how animals protect themselves.

Coming up this Week:

We will be celebrating Reading Week.  Our theme is Hope-Heal-Read

We are planning many wonderful activities to tie in with this theme.  Please make sure your child has a book to read in his or her backpack on Tuesday.  We will be having times built into our schedule to Drop Everything and Read.

This book will be read to the classes, as well as, many others that have to do with having hope and healing during this panademic.

Oh! The Things We Have Done!!!

This past week we celebrated Dr. Seuss's Birthday with many fun and learning activities.  The children, as well as, the teachers had lots of fun.

Tuesday:
We celebrated by wearing their favorite hats.
The children had a blast.  It was great to see so many children around the school in all sorts of different hats.

Wednesday: We were a bunch of mix-matched students and adults as we took on Wacky Wednesday.  Even my classroom was a bit out of sorts.

Thursday: We wore red and blue.

Friday:
Oh! The Places You'll Go

As you can see we had a week full of events and the students seem to have enjoyed every minute of it.

Even though there was a lot going on during the week, the children still worked on Health and History projects.  They are continuing work with the EL  Curriculum and in Math they have begun long division.
