We had another week of learning and discovery in 4Z. The children presented their google slides about the natural disaster they chose to research. This went along with the theme of our Wonders unit about how people respond to natural disasters. It was wonderful seeing what they read about and connecting that into their slides. Each student was able to come up and present what they created.
In Math we are continuing with Place Value, Comparing Numbers and Rounding Numbers. This past week we also started Math Stations. There were a number of activities that the children were able to participate in. Many had to do with Place Value games.
With Social Studies, the children are continuing to learn about the symbols and features of Rhode Island. Our postcards are ready for the mail, and they created booklets about maps and globes.
In Science they are contnuing with Systems. There is a lot of collaboration and teamwork happening. They come in eager each morning to see if the experment with the solar panel is working. We had some spinning around , while other students are trying to figure out why their's isn't spinning around.
In Grammar we are finishing up our lessons about Subjects and Predicates. They created charts within their groups in which first they came up with 5 subjsects and then we passed them along to other tables to finish up the sentences with predicates. Tomorrow will be a fun review game to help them study for their test.
I enjoy watching them collaborate and work together to get a task completed. The conversations are great to listen to.
Here are some more examples of them cooperating and working in their groups.
Station Rotations are coming along nicely. They are learning the way to transition from one station to the next. They follow the norms and complete the many activities at each one. I love to see them working together.
On Friday, I began a new policy with them. I have noticed that some of them are rushing through their work and there has been a lot of running in the halls. I am now going to give them "speeding tickets" in hopes that this will teach them to slow it down. In the event that they are given a tickety they will be fined 5 dojo points and 2 for the blurting out tickets.
Friday the children also were able to redeem some of their dojo points for the Dojo Store. There were some great treats to choose from and the items are all labeled with how much each one "costs."
The children loved shopping and some even saved their points for bigger and better items to buy as the year progresses.
What a week and now we rest for the long weekend. I am so proud of the wonderful work and efforts that the children are showing. Our morning meetings are continuing as well, there are some great conversations going on and some not so great due to some behaviors we are seeing. All in all though, we are trying to make better choices and treating one another with respect. Respect is our character trait for the month of October.
As we continue to read, our 40 Book Challenge tower is growing.
We are heading in the right direction and it seems like we are in full swing of things. I love the progress I am seeing and how we are all looking out for one another.
