Persevere and Get it Done!

Our Character Trait for this month is Perseverance.  Our students here at SOS, strive to do their best and push through to get tasks done.  We have been practicing for our RICAS state testing and we see how the children are getting through difficult math problems and despite the challenges they believe in themselves and get the task done.

Amplify Science:

The students have been learning about Animal Adaptations and how they survive in their enviornment.  They partner up to read, and then collaborate on completing workbook pages.  I enjoy watching them work together and listening to the great conversations that take place.  They help each other out in answering questions and discuss what they have read.

Reveal Math:

Our Math curriculum lends itself to collaboration, self discovery and conversations about what we wonder and are curious about.  We have been working with partial products, area models and a lot of RICAS practice duringour Intervention Block.  We are learning the strategies to use on word problems and using the tools that are provided to us during testing.  We encourage the use of scrap paper to work out math problems.

Station Rotation/Wonders:
Our center time has been running much smoother.  The children know their groups, what they need to do and transition from one to the other within a minute or two and get right to work.  It is nice to see them helping each other and discussing the breakdown of how to get to the final answer.

At any given station, you see the collaboration with one another and hear the discussions they are having about a particular topic or assignment.

Book Project:
The students worked on completing a cereal book project at home and this week we were about to have them present them to their classmates.  They did a wonderful job and I am pleased to display their work outside of our classroom.

Listening to the presentations was something that we all enjoyed.  We even had one student create a commercial for her classmates.  Love the creativity that went into all of these projects.

Social Studies:
We have begun our discussions about our Live Wax Museum,  The children seem excited about it and are looking forward to get this started. The students will be researching famous Rhode Islanders, both past and current.  They will become that person by dressing and giving a speech to represent who they are.  This is always a great project that we end the year with.  It will take us most of the 3rd trimester to work on it.  They will research and do the written report here at school.  At home they will prepare their trifold, gather any items that go along with it and put together what they will wear.

  • Monday is a distance learning day while teachers attend various meetings.  Their work will be posted on Google Classroom.  We will not be holding any google meets, but the children do have work that needs to be completed.
  • Reading Week starts on Tuesday.  Ms.Gambardella and the district have put together some wonderful reading activities that will take place throughout the week.
  • Our Talent Show is taking place on Friday night.  I hear that there are many wonderful acts that are being performed.
  • Our Scholastic Book Fair is taking place this week.  The students will be shopping on Wednesday.
Have a wonderful week!!

There will be much more to follow involving this project.  Check your child's folder to see what handouts go home with information about this process.
