Amazing Things are Happening

There are some great things happening in the classroom.  The children are working hard with their i-Ready diagnostic assessment.  The routines are getting underway and they are building great connections with our classmates and ourselves.  I love to hear the conversations they have during group work and seeing their happy faces as they enter the classroom.  We are pretty much in our normal routine with just a few hiccups along the way.

Wonders:

Last week we read about Earthquakes and other natural disasters.  We are using the Anthology book and the Reading/Writing Companion book for our lessons.  The children get the opportunity to work in small group and sometimes independently to show what they are learning.

The children have also been working on i-Ready Reading Diagnostic throughout the week.

Math:

In Math we have been doing some reviewing of last year such as, math terms, place value, and multiplication.  We took a course diagnostic to see what the children remembered and what we need to work on.

Throughout the week, we have also been catching up on Grammar (types of sentences), Spelling (we had our first test on Friday) and familiarizing ourselves with other procedures and getting to all our specials.

Writing:
The children all have writer´s notebooks where they do a lot of the writing.  On Friday, I read The Best Part of Me and they did a writing piece about it.  This is still a work in progress and they will be putting together a class book about it.  I cannot wait to see how it turns out.
While they write I put on music for them so that they are able to focus and hopefully let the creativity emerge.

Other Things in the Classroom:
We are trying to reach our goal of 20 stars to get a reward for our behavior.

We also have group points that they earn and the top table at the end of the week earns a prize.

On Friday, we held our first Student of the Week- Congratulations to Alex for being our Star Student. He is very helpful and respectful to all.

This past week, we also gained 2 new students in our class.  Welcome to Josiah and Hayley.  We hope they have a successful and pleasant year here at SOS.

Here are just a few other pictures of things we have worked on and are doing.

Here are some of the things happening this upcoming week:
I have a few activities planned revolving around Peter Reynold´s book The Dot for Monday
The children will visit the book fair on Tuesday and it will also take place at Open House.

Mr. Pacitto will hold a 4th grade assembly on Wednesday for all the 4th graders.  He will be discussing some of the things that are coming up, as well as, our STAR qualities.
On Thursday night (6-7) we will host our Open House.  I hope to meet many of you.

Hope you all enjoy the rest of the weekend.
