Pen Pals:
Our students are very excited about receiving their pen pal letters. These will probably be the last ones coming to the school. I have told the children that they can keep it going over the summer and beyond. As soon as they received the letters they went right into responding. I gave each student a RI postcard to fill in and I will drop them in the mail this week. Many of the schools we are writing to are ending their school year in 2-3 weeks, so we are doing our best to get them right over to them.
Wonders Work:
The children read part of The Cricket in Times Square and are working on character traits. We are reading about 2 of the characters and through our reading, we are determining what they are like.
Writing: Opinion/Persuasive:
The children have been writing about their opinions on certain topics. One was would want a longer recess, but that would involve a longer school day. They also had to give their opinion on various prompts that they chose like, best movie, write why classmates should vote for you for class president, and many others that were available. It was interesting to listen to the conversations and reasons they had.
Reading Time:
When children finish up all their work, I let them choose a book and read anywhere in the room as long as they do not disturb others. Many love choosing the rug.
Self Care:
It is okay to take time for yourself. It is ok to break away from your normal routine to destress. It is ok to walk to your favorite spot and reflective and it is ok to go to your happy place. I find myself thinking is taking some me time selfish? The answer is no, we should not feel that taking time to reflect or think or break away, is not selfish, it is because we need that time for ourselves, so that we can refresh, refocus and get back on task. So if you are having a bad day, it is all right to try strategies to get you back on track.
