It is hard to believe that as I am writing this, we only have 5 more school days left. The year flew by, it did not seem at first. Things were so new, the children, supplies, the room itself, but as time has passed the children have grown so much. The supplies are dwindling and the classroom is ready for another makeover. Yet here we are 175 days later, the children are ready to move on and become the 5th graders of SOS. I had a wonderful time with them this year. We have been doing so much, even at the end of our days here in the classroom. Whenever anyone walks by, they see us engaged in reading or math or some other fun activity.
ABC Summer Countdown-
This past week was dedicated to Q, R, S, T, and U. Monday started with the children asking our 5th graders questions. Tuesday we moved onto Reflecting on the year we have had. Show and Tell was a great one and Teamwork is always part of our days. The week ended with discovering life Under the Sea. I hope the children are enjoying this countdown, as we are nearing the last 5 days.
A Mini Concert:
Mr. Berger and the 5th grade band class treated us to a mini concert on Monday. We were invited down to the cafe and listened to some of the 5th graders play instruments for us. The children have an opportunity to join the band in the fall.
Union Free Library Presentation:
Representatives from the Union Free Library, here in town, came to speak to the students about the Summer Reading program that is going to take place. There are many activities and events happening. There are contests happening with raffle tickets being earned. They can win some great prizes. Please consider having your child be a part of this experience. Make sure to contact the library to see when all these events begin.
I will be sending home the reading tracker for them by the end of this week. For every 15 minutes that they read, they will tally it up. Once the paper is filled they can turn it in at the library.
Senior Walk:
This past week, we had seniors from the high school walk the hallways. We cheered them on and wish them all the best as they start their new chapter. In the crowd were a few of my former students and the tutor that helped us out during the year.
Special Art Class:The children took 2 art classes to create, and paint their pottery pieces. Thank you to Thomas´
mom for coming in and providing them with the supplies they needed. They made some beautiful pieces.
Our Last Student Council Meeting:
For the past 3-4 years Mrs. Sanchez and I have had the honor of running the 5th grade student council. We have enjoyed planning all the spirit weeks, pep rally and many other wonderful events that have taken place throughout the school year. We held our last meeting on Wednesday. These fifth graders did a great job in being the voices of their classmates and for our school. We wish them well as they move on to Middle School. Next year, your child may have the honor of serving on the committee.
We met once a month in the morning and would discuss things we needed to plan and made them happen.
A Special Send Off for Mrs. Pezza:
Many of you know that our beloved Mrs. Pezza is retiring. On Friday, the school community came together to give her a proper send off. Children who had Mrs. Pezza in first grade created poems, cards, gave her flowers and so much more. She was so surprised. Everyone, even if they did not have her as a teacher, gathered in the gym and we spent a great morning, honoring her, cheering her on, and wishing her all the best as she begins her new chapter.
New Mascot
We have a new mascot here at SOS and we were introduced to him on Friday. He is the dancing cougar.
He visited all the classrooms on Friday afternoon. I am sure we will see more of him.
More Pictures from the Week:
This will start tomorrow. The student council planned this last one with summer in mind. Hope to see all the children participating on the various days.
Although we are all ready to head into summer break, we still have 5 days left. We are still learning but making it fun also. In addition to finishing up the ABC Summer Countdown, I have planned for 5 special days dedicated to a theme. We will have a 5 day balloon pop. Within the balloon, there will be a slip of paper with a theme for the day. Letś end strong and on a positive note.
